The New Moon in Virgo occurs on September 17, 2020 at 7 am EDT in the 25th degree of Virgo. Virgo, which is represented by the Hermit in the Tarot, is ruled by Mercury. Thus, a New Moon in Virgo represents a new beginning of self-knowledge and a practical intellectual understanding of newly developing situations.

To determine what situation we are looking to understand, we must look to the disposition of the ruler of the New Moon sign. Mercury is located in the 17th degree of Libra, the sign of the Balances of Justice. The Sabian symbol for this degree is “Two Men Placed Under Arrest.” Presumably they are awaiting justice.

Mercury is exactly square to Jupiter in Capricorn. Some astrologers refer to this aspect as “The Exaggerator.” Mercury is taking a hard look at a type of ego-inflation and self-aggrandizement manifesting in the form of telling people what they want to hear, promising things that cannot be delivered, and an unreliable laziness combined with a lack of critical thinking. Like all things depicted in the heavens, this aspect has both an internal and external manifestation. These are the two who must be placed under arrest.

Jupiter is sextile Neptune located in the 19th degree of Pisces. Neptune is in his own element here, the Great Sea, Boundless Love, the Wisdom of Timeless Awareness. And he is directly opposite the New Moon in Virgo. Here is the dynamic energy being received, dissolving old patterns of thought so that new ones can be established. We must deliberately invite this energy in, as directed by the Sabian symbol of the degree of the New Moon in Virgo, “A Boy With A Censer Serves The Priest Near The Altar.”

There is one more aspect to consider. The New Moon is trine Saturn in Capricorn. Saturn is force that limits or resists Jupiter, which is the force that needs to be arrested here. Saturn is stability, and thus is represented by the altar. The Priest is the Sun. The Boy is Mercury. The censer must thus contain an incense of Mercury, the most common of which is White Sandalwood. This incense can be used to strengthen Mercury against the depredations of a fallen Jupiter throughout the waxing moon. (One could also burn the incense of Neptune, which is Ambergris, but the possession and trade thereof is prohibited in the United States by the Endangered Species Act. Save the whales!)

The Full Moon on October 1 will meet Chiron in Aries, bringing emotional healing following in the wings of the practical intellectual understanding initiated by this New Moon.
